In 2008, the members voted to search out the possibility of setting up a Thrift Store. Three executive members, plus 2 other members investigated as to how other Auxiliary Thrift Shops were operating, on the Island, and brought that information back to the membership. The entire executive voted to investigate the possibilities here in Duncan. Arlene Cristofoli, Treasurer at the time, found the current location to be available and after President Maggie Chambers, Vice President Betty-Anne Adelborg, and Treasurer Arlene Cristofoli viewed the sight, decided to poll the full executive as to whether to go ahead. It was a unanimous vote to proceed. The Vice President introduced her close friends and business associates (recently retired) to the idea of managing the store for the Auxiliary and they graciously accepted the challenge. They, and a few spouses and members, descended on the location to transform the old restaurant into a very acceptable shop, and the doors were opened to the public in May 2008.

This shop very quickly became the ‘place to go’ which has greatly increased the Auxiliary’s ability to purchase many more items for the hospital and Cairnsmore place, that helps to maintain the mandate of ‘CARE & COMFORT’ for patients and residents. It wouldn’t have been as successful without the dedication of the members working at the Thrift Shop, or the wonderful donations that continually come in from the generous citizens of the Cowichan Valley.

Thanks to everyone, we were able to donate over $259,000 to the Cowichan District Hospital and Cairnsmore Place in our first four years..

H.A.T.S. volunteers are members of the Auxiliary to Cowichan District Hospital, Lake Cowichan Auxiliary and Lake/Bay/Hill Auxiliary.

What makes our Thrift Store special?

EVERYTHING is cleaned before it is offered for sale.  Clothing, dishes, shoes, books, jewelry boxes... literally everything that comes into the store is washed, ironed, dusted and polished!

We recycle what we cannot use or re-sell.
